Plain, in gray homespun and prayer cap, gifted teenaged Hetty has one desire in life. To sing. But the Brethren tradition in the mountain village of Singer’s Glen, Virginia, forbids a girl to perform in public.
Tragedy forces Hetty to live with her austere grandmother until catastrophe pushes her to run away and seek shelter with an eclectic group of Christian ladies living in a former Madam’s house in Ohio. Under the tutelage of a noted maestro she becomes a famous singer, the new Nightingale of Cincinnati.
Naïve and vulnerable to the ways of the world, Hetty fears the curse of an ancient evil skylark which is ever present, ever threatening to send her into a spiral of illness and disorder. She falls under the spell of a man, finds herself pregnant, and at his mercy. She must decide whether to marry this man, the father of her unborn child.
The skylark sings as her husband cruelly forces her into his life of lies, gambling, and crime. At the breaking point, to avoid succumbing to his evil, she fights with her one last weapon she wills her voice to silence. Will the skylark’s curse triumph or will she be the greatest singer to come from the Shenandoah Mountains?
Hetty Song The Death of the Skylark eBook Barbara A Andrews
This is as entertaining a book as I have ever read. The story itself is captivating, drawing the reader into the struggles, triumphs, and tragedies of Hetty''s life. She is a charming, lovable, frustrating young woman; one minute I wanted to celebrate her spunk in pursuing her dreams, then she would do something so foolish I wanted to ask her what was she thinking; then I would remember the times and circumstances of her upbringing, and think, "would I do any bettet?" My heart was touched in so many ways by her journey, and I was overjoyed with her vow to reclaim her God-given gift of song. The story was made even more enjoyable by the gorgeous descriptive narration. From the depressing, repressive atmosphere of her childhood, to the striking loveliness of the natural world, to the grandeur and opulence of Cincinnati's high society, we are immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding the characters. One of the most vivid images, to me, was that of Hetty, pregnant and sick, trying to make a squalid room in a gambling den/brothel into a clean, habitable home.
In short (I know -- too late), a fascinating story beautifully told.

Hetty Song The Death of the Skylark eBook Barbara A Andrews Reviews
From the beginning of the story, Andrews captures the feelings of a girl on the cusp of womanhood. Stifled by her families' strict faith, Hetty is only allowed to work, not sing as her soul wishes. Left by her parents with her overly zealous religious grandmother, Hetty does the one thing many teenagers dream of - runs away. The choices she makes in the following years make ones heart ache. At times I wanted her to step up and say no to those who ran her life, but the historical times gave her few choices.
This was a good read. The only thing I felt could have been done better was the ending. It was too abrupt.
A very intense, wonderfully written fiction book debuts "Hetty's Song, the Death of the Skylark." Barbara Andrews, author, sent me an advance copy for review. Set in the latter 19th-century, a young woman with a gifted, promising voice survives severe personal tragedy when she strikes out from the confines of her restrictive, punitive religious upbringing in order to pursue her dream of singing publicly, a pursuit not allowed to women within her society. Horrific consequences overwhelm her as she becomes a star performer before she understands the darker side of life and how others will want a piece of the action and control of its rewards. The theme of the skylark illustrates Hetty's conflict with all of it. The book riveted my attention throughout, especially in the winding up scenes. It's a haunting, redemptive story that never dilutes its strength in faddish fantasy. Realism and grit integrate with deep caring for lovely things of the heart.
In Hetty's Song, author Barbara Andrews tells the story of a young girl's journey from sheltered backwoods innocence to urban womanhood in late-18th-century America. The book is full of vivid characters and evocative settings so rich in detail that it feels almost as though the author is giving us an eyewitness account.
Born to a strict religious family in the Shenandoah Valley and isolated from the rest of society, young Hetty longs to break free. The first time she encounters music outside her family church, she performs a duet with a friendly sweet-voiced boy. The experience thrills her, but her family disapproves and forbids her to leave her mountain home again.
Determined to expand her musical horizons, Hetty runs away to Cincinnati, where her beautiful voice wins her the support of a wealthy patron and the attentions of a mysterious man. Her reputation as a gifted singer grows, and her dream of a life filled with song comes true.
But she soon learns that being an independent woman may not be everything she dreamed of. Free to choose her own path, she stumbles along the way, and loses everything. Once again, she must break away from the obstacles holding her back and fight to regain her destiny.
While this book was based in the 1800's, who can't relate to being a teenager that feels invincible and is eager to pursue a dream? Hetty is gifted with a beautiful voice and feels stifled by family responsibilities and her religious influences. She decides to escape-her-chains so to speak and follow her dream. As you read her story, you can't help but admire the courage and sometimes want to admonish her decisions as well...though we all know, anyone at that age will sometimes make crazy choices.
I especially loved the detailed descriptions of setting and character and would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good historical with a very poignant coming of age story.
Hetty's Song is an interesting, well written account of a young Brethern girl's difficult coming of age; almost literally a baptism by fire. Hetty's attempt to overcome and escape her radical religious upbringing takes her across the late 1800's landscape from VA to Omaha. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, Hetty also struggles with a mental affliction, for which the ever-present skylark serves as a metaphor. This same skylark tormented her ancestral grandmother from 17th century Switzerland.
Barbara Andrews has obviously researched her topic extensively, making her characters come alive in realistic settings, reflecting America's rural and growing urban life in
the late 1800's. I enjoyed not only the plot twists, but the background descriptions of
the landscapes, clothing, and lifestyles of both rich and poor.
The themes of overcoming adversity, struggling with mental illness, and enhancing and using a God-given talent, provide the reader with not only enjoyment, but thoughtful
reflection.
The story just building page after page. It was so interesting to follow Hetty though this adventure of her life. The descriptions of Hetty and all the other charaters in the book were so great. It was the type of story that you wanted it to go on and on.
